Who is Brookies Fish Market?
Meet Chris
OWNER | TWINS FANATIC | FISH LOVER
Chris Nelson, who grew up in northern Minnesota has been in the fresh fish and seafood industry since 1998. Chris got his feet wet (or should we say, started developing his gills) at Morey’s Market and Grill in Brainerd Minnesota.
For the next 8 years he embraced his new passion and love for the fish and seafood industry in a retail setting.
In 2020 Chris decided to put a plan in place to get back to his first passion in this industry, retail sales, and he decided he wanted to try doing it on his own.
Meet Mikel
PART OWNER | MUSICIAN | OYSTER CONNOISSEUR
Mikel has a long standing love of working with food.
Mikel brings with him over 8 years of experience working with seafood and gourmet products at Kowalskis, Coastal Seafoods, and Fortune Fish and Gourmet. He’s also spent the last few years traveling across both the east and west coast eating oysters and gathering inspiration from various seafood markets which he is excited to bring to Brookies!
When he’s not slanging fish at the market you can find him playing in his local band, enjoying the twin cities culinary scene with his wife, Kayla, and adventuring in the great Minnesota outdoors with his four legged best friend, Quinn.
Meet Mohamed
FISH LOVER | AVID ANGLER
For as long as Mohamed can remember he has loved all things fishy. His passion for learning everything he could about seafood drove him into the retail fish market industry. He promptly developed his knowledge and mongering skillset at the famously known, Coastal Seafoods Markets. Over the last 5 years he has become one of Minneapolis’ most respected and skillful fish mongers. If he is not working behind the counter at Brookies Fish Market there is a strong chance you could find him on a local river bank or lake casting out a line. Whether you need a quick tip or a little kitchen confidence boost, Mo is your guy.
Meet Nick
COLLEGE STUDENT | PART TIME MONGER
Coastal Seafoods H.O.F.O.G. Fish Monger
Straight outta Saint Louis Park, Nick is our hometown hero with a college schedule and a seafood hustle. When he’s not hitting the books, he’s behind the counter slinging the freshest catch and sharpening his fishmonger skills one fillet at a time.
Nick’s always eager to learn, talk food, and swap cooking ideas—so if you’ve got dinner plans, he wants to hear about them.
Meet “T.A.” (Bullpen)
COLLEGE STUDENT | PART TIME MONGER
Born and raised right here in St. Louis Park, Adam is currently studying at the University of Denver. Around Brookies, however, he's better known as T.A.—our very first employee and a certified Brookies original.
These days, T.A. spends most of the year away at school, but every summer we happily call him up from the minors and back into the big leagues at Brookies. Much to the relief of our customers, he always answers the call.
Standing somewhere between "very tall" and "are you sure he's not a power forward?", T.A. is quite literally a tall drink of water. We're incredibly lucky to have him back behind the counter whenever his studies, adventures, and travels allow.
T.A. also speaks fluent Spanish, so whether English is your second language or you just want to swap travel stories with someone who's always planning his next adventure, he's your guy. Stop by, say hello, and see if you can get a recommendation before he heads off on his next journey.
Meet Sam (Bullpen)
Rumor has it Sam has been in the seafood business since he was a minnow. Around here, we proudly refer to him as the “The O.G.”, Original Gangsta Fish Monger of the Twin Cities—a title he has earned through decades of seafood wisdom, culinary creativity, and an almost supernatural ability to talk fish.
Sam is a culinary mad man, private chef, and seafood encyclopedia all rolled into one. Whether you're looking for the perfect fish for dinner, a new preparation technique, or just want to debate the merits of grilling versus pan-searing, Sam is always ready for the conversation.
These days, Sam serves as one of Brookies' elite bullpen mongers, making special appearances behind the counter when the stars align. Spotting him at the market is a bit like spotting a Devils Hole Pupfish in the wild—rare, exciting, and definitely worth celebrating.
If you happen to walk in and see Sam working you might want to swing by the convenience store afterward and buy a lottery ticket. It's clearly your day.
Brook trout inhabit lakes, rivers, streams, creeks, and spring ponds. They prefer clear water with high purity and a narrow PH range. Brook trout are very sensitive to poor oxygenation, pollution and changes in PH levels caused by environmental effects.
The term “Brookie” is slang for brook trout.
Brook trout are native to a wide area of North America.
